Lanai Information

Lanai Vacation

Looking for a romantic setting for your Hawaii vacation? Look no further than the island of Lanai. Known as “Hawaii’s Most Enticing Island" and the "Secluded Island," Lanai offers privacy and beautifully romantic landscapes. Lanai also offers some of the best diving spots of all beach vacation destinations.

Lanai Attractions

  • Sweetheart Rock, also known by its Hawaiian name, Puu Pehe, rests    about 150 feet offshore and is one of Lanai's most famous landmarks and the setting of one of Hawaii's most timeless legends.
  • Cathedral Dives : The cathedral dives take place in a 100 foot long by 20-foot high lava tube. The reflection of sunlit blue water on the black lava walls creates an effect compared by many divers to the stained glass of Renaissance-period Catholic churches, hence the name "cathedral dives." The lava tube is home to unusual, small fish and crustaceans, and outside the tube you will find an abundance of marine life.
  • Hulopoe Bay with its golden sand beach is recognized as one of the America's best beaches. Located on Lanai's sunny, South Coast, Hulopoe Bay's protected, deep blue waters are frequented by acrobatic, spinner dolphins. From December through April, you'll also see humpback whales. The bay is a perfect place to snorkel, swim, body board, and explore the tide pools, and is another reason a Lanai vacation is one of our best beach vacations.

Lanai Activities

A Lanai vacation is all the more fun if you rent a four-wheel drive because so many of things to do on Lanai require this. If you four-wheel or hike up the 7-mile Munro Trail, you can see all of Lanai, plus Maui, Molokai, Kahoolawe (non-inhabited), Oahu, and the Big island (Hawaii Island).

Another famous landmark on Lanai, Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods), is only accessible by four-wheel. You can also book four-wheel tours so you can experience the island from the passenger's seat.

Other fun activities on Lanai include Manele's posh tennis center, horseback riding, sporting clays (Lanai has one of the country's best facilities), and all of the beach and ocean activities mentioned above.

Another fun activity is to visit Shipwreck Beach where you can beach comb to your heart's content - - or snorkel, scuba or just enjoy the sand and sea.

If golf is your passion, your Lanai vacation will not disappoint. This tiny island has two championship, world-famous, golf courses. The Experience at Koele is a Greg Norman classic, situated in the highlands where the climate's comfortably cool and where each hole offers beautiful views. The Challenge at Manele is a crowning achievement of Jack Nicklaus and takes you along Lanai's sea cliffs. Each hole has five tee locations for golfers of all levels and offers ocean views.

Lanai Accomodations

Your beach vacation on Lanai can be all the better when you relax at one of the island's resorts, such as the cool and cozy Four Seasons Resort Lanai at The Lodge at Koele or the ocean side Four Seasons Resort Lana'i at Manele Bay.

For a more at homey feel, try the Hotel Lanai or one of the island's B&Bs. Because Lanai is so close to Maui, many like to make Maui their main beach vacation destination, and then hop over to Lanai for a day or two...or three...or four...well, you get the point.

Lanai Travel Facts

You can reach Lanai via a short ride on the Maui-Lanai ferry or by air on an inter-island flight out of Honolulu International Airport or with a smaller air operator from one of the neighbor Islands.

Lanai is the smallest of the six main Hawaiian islands. Lanai is only 18 miles in the longest direction. Lanai City is the only town on the island and is more of a small settlement than a city.

While Lanai isn't a major tourist destination (it was largely a pineapple plantation until recent years), if your list of things to do on Lanai includes scuba diving, snorkeling or horseback riding tour, book well in advance, especially if your plan to take your Lanai vacation during the high tourism season.
