Hawaii Snorkeling on Molokai

This small island near Maui offers some of the best snorkeling in Hawaii. On Molokai you can gaze at a rainbow of fish and coral along Hawaii's longest beaches and at the foot of the world's highest sea cliffs. If you're staying on Maui, you can take a Hawaii snorkeling tour to Molokai, or you can catch a ferry to Molokai and stay on this "most Hawaiian" of all islands, and go snorkeling with a Molokai guided tour.

While snorkeling in Hawaii is great year round at popular spots such as Hanauma Bay on Oahu and Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island, snorkeling on Molokai in most locations is not recommended from mid-September through April, due to extremely strong currents generated by storms in Alaska. However, one exception is Murphy Beach Park (also known as Kumimi Beach Park) on the East End, where conditions are generally calm year round.

During the calm summer months, professionally run 2-hour snorkel tours are offered on the amazing west side of Molokai. Here the waters are clear and reef is alive with colorful coral and marine life. Like Oahu's North Shore, Molokai's west side with its high winter surf turns into a snorkeler’s paradise during Hawaii's summer months. During this time, some of the best shoreline snorkeling includes:

  • Pohaku, Moiliili Kawaikiunui, Ilio Point(West End) --  Try to go by sea on a snorkel tour  or rent kayaks. Otherwise, it's a long, hot dusty ride, followed by a hike there.
  • Dixie Maru – Also on the West End, this is a gold-sand, family beach with a reef close to shore and shallow waters, which is sure to please those who snorkel in Hawaii.
