Molokai

Aptly known as the "Most Hawaiian Island" and "The Friendly Isle," Molokai takes you back in time to "old Hawaii." Just a short ferry or plane ride from Maui, a Molokai vacation is not for those seeking a glamorous nightlife. However, if your beach vacation dreams include unspoiled beaches and wilderness, the friendliest culture in Hawaii, and a multitude of ways to relax and experience exciting outdoor adventures, then start making your Molokai travel plans today.

Molokai Attractions

Kalaupapa National Historic Park: Surrounded on three sides by the ocean and walled off from the rest of the island by the world's largest sea cliffs, this park is a place of amazing beauty. Sure-footed mules take visitors down to Kalaupapa on a switchback trail that traverses the highest sea cliffs in the world. The National Park can also be accessed by airplane.

Molokai Ranch: A Molokai vacation can have the best of both worlds, luxury and nature, when one stays in a luxury room at Ranch's Lodge & Beach Village.  After a relaxing evening and restful sleep, take part in one of the many Molokai activities that are hosted by the Ranch, such as horseback riding, target shooting, mountain biking, kayaking, and golf (on the incredibly beautiful Kaluakoi golf course).

Molokai Activities

Besides the above mentioned activities, a Molokai vacation may include snorkeling or kayaking over sections of Molokai's 32-mile protected barrier reef, mountain biking, deep sea fishing, surfing and surfing lessons, hiking, diving and or more!

Molokai offers some of the best diving in the world (chosen for clarity, abundance of sea life and the longest barrier reef in Hawaii). Molokai is also a snorkeler's paradise whether you're snorkeling off one of its many beautiful sandy beaches or with a tour on the barrier reef.

Whale watching is also a very popular Molokai activity, and from December to April you can take a whale watching tour in the channel between Molokai, Maui and Lanai.

If shopping is on your list of things to do no Molokai, you can look forward to small, privately owned shops with many authentically crafted Hawaiian items. If you want malls and glamour, ferry over to Maui or fly to Honolulu.

A Molokai beach vacation is the perfect venue for learning about the real Hawaii and island culture from Hawaiians. You will find many opportunities on Molokai to learn the old ways of Hawaiian crafts, fishing and music. If you time your Molokai vacation right, you can learn to play Hawaiian music from the internationally famous slack key artist, Keola Beamer and his family at the biannual Aloha Music Camp.

Molokai Accomodations

If you are looking for luxury on your Molokai vacation, book your reservations at the Lodge at Molokai Ranch http://www.molokairanch.com/, the 53,000 acre retreat noted above. This is an ecologically designed, family friendly, oceanfront, luxury resort.  The setting is casual, but oh so comfortable and peaceful, offering the perfect place to unwind during your Molokai beach vacation. Also on Molokai, you will find charming B&Bs, budget friendly condos, lovely vacation rentals and peaceful campgrounds.

Molokai Travel Facts

Things to do on Molokai are never too far away because this island is only 38 by 10 miles in size, making it a little less than half the size of Kauai, and the fifth largest of the six main Hawaii islands.

From the west end of Molokai at night, you can see Honolulu's city lights, and from the south shore of Molokai, you can see Maui and Lanai.

The largest town on Molokai is the sea port of Kaunakakai, population 2,726 (2000 census). Molokai's total population ranges from 6,000 to 8,000 depending on the amount of visitors on any given day.

While there are no traffic lights on Molokai and the tallest building is shorter than a palm tree, you can rent a car to get around and make the most of your Molokai travel.

You can reach Molokai by inter-island flight from Oahu or Maui. Another option, which is used by those who live on Molokai and work on Maui is the Molokai – Maui Ferry. http://molokaiferry.com/

While tourism isn't as big here as the larger islands, it's still a good idea to book ahead for Molokai activity tours, especially during the high tourism season (summer, spring break and major holidays).
